Breath of Fire

Breath of Fire: A Powerful Breathing Practice to Clear Your Mind and Energize Your Body

If you have ever felt foggy, scattered or low on energy and wished you could reset in minutes - breath of fire might be exactly what you need.

Breath of fire is a rapid breathing technique done in and out through the nose. It is one of the foundational practices in Kundalini Yoga and one of the most powerful tools I return to again and again in my own life. Before a big presentation, when I need to clear my head, or whenever I want to shift my energy quickly - this is my go-to.

How It Works

The technique is simpler than it sounds. To begin, place your hand just underneath your nostrils and imagine a candle flame right there. Your one job is to blow that candle out - through your nose.

When you exhale, your belly naturally pushes back toward the spine. The inhale happens automatically. You do not need to think about breathing in at all. Just focus on the exhale. The breath takes care of the rest.

Start slowly to find the rhythm, then gradually increase your pace as you feel comfortable. If at any point you feel lightheaded, simply slow down and return to long, deep breathing. Once your energy feels balanced, you can pick the pace back up.

Why It Matters

Most of us have weak diaphragms - and this matters more than we realize. The diaphragm is your power center. When it is strong, everything in the body feels more powerful - your voice, your presence, your ability to stay grounded under pressure.

Breath of fire is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the diaphragm. With regular practice, you will notice a difference not just in your breathing but in your overall sense of vitality and mental clarity.

A Simple Way to Begin

Sit up tall with your chin slightly tucked. Rest the backs of your hands on your knees with your fingers relaxed. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in, exhale fully, and begin pumping the breath. Start with just 30 seconds and see how you feel.

When you finish, take a deep breath in, hold for a moment, then exhale completely. Release your hands and simply notice. Has your mind become quieter? Do you feel more present?

That shift - that stillness - is breath of fire doing its work.
